Mto wa Mbu
Tanzania is spotted with beautiful road-side villages each with their own cultural flavour. Mto Wambu, translating to "Mosquito River", is far more inviting then it's name. Filled with an abundance of craft and produce stalls, it is famous for growing rice and deliciously sweet red bananas. It is also the only place Tanzania where all 25 tribes can be found in the one place. A perfect environment to stop and pick up a unique piece of local handicraft.

Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Manyara
Visit a Maasai Village on the Ngorongoro Rim. The NCA is home to the Maasai pastoralists (people whose economy is based on livestock). Originally they lived in the north of Kenya and travelled south along the Nile valley with their livestock, settling in a place now known as the Maasai Mara area. At about 200 years ago there was a heavy drought, at which time they saw a weaver bird carrying a green leaf in its mouth, arriving from the south. Warriors were sent to the south to find the source of this greenery in the hope of finding food for their cattle.
They had with them a big herd of goats and sheep as their only food source. It took them one month, one week and three days to arrive in the Serengeti. The endless plain had an abundance of game which they named "Seringiti", meaning "endless plain". After another 6 weeks they reached Ndutu, which they called "endut" meaning a place with a water-filled lake in the plains. Soon after they followed a gorge which brought them to an area full of sisal plants which they named Oldupai, meaning a country with sisal plants.
Following a strange heavy smokey cloud they ended up in the Ngorongoro highlands. When the cloud cleared they followed animal tracks down into a vast crater. They couldn't find a safe place to settle so they built a boma and were astounded by how chilly it was.
Eventually they returned home bringing their families back to Ngorongoro. We now have the rare privilege to be allowed into their boma which remains very much the same as it was all those years ago.
