The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Ngorongoro) was declared a conservation area in 1959 and at that point was separated from the Serengeti National Park.  The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority is the governing body, both regulating use and access to the Ngorongoro. The area became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979.  It is still considered part of the Serengeti Ecosystem and is adjoined to the Serengeti at it's north-east  point, and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains.         Ngorongoro extends in the north to the unprotected Liliondo division which is kept open to wildlife through transhuman pastoralism practiced by the Maasai people.  The south and west of the area feature high volcanic lands, including the caldera famously known as the Ngorongoro Crater, and the lesser known Empakai. The awe-inspiring feature Ngorongoro Crater is actually the largest unbroken caldera in the world.

The Ngorongoro has a healthy resident population of most species of wildlife, with the highest density of mammalian predators in Africa living in the crater.  These include black rhino, which have declined from about 108 in 1964-66 to just 11 to 14 rhinos in 1995.  Also included are hippotamus which are very uncommon in the area, and many other animals such as lions, elephant, buffalo, gazelles, zebras, hyenas and wilderbeast to name a few.  The area is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for wildlife whilst allowing human habitation.

Visit a Maasai Village on the Ngorongoro Rim. The NCA is home to the Maasai pastoralists (people whose economy is based on livestock). Originally they lived in the north of Kenya and travelled south along the Nile valley with their livestock, settling in a place now known as the Maasai Mara area.  At about 200 years ago there was a heavy drought, at which time they saw a weaver bird carrying a green leaf in its mouth, arriving from the south.  Warriors were sent to the south to find the source of this greenery in the hope of finding food for their cattle.

They had with them a big herd of goats and sheep as their only food source.  It took them one month, one week and three days to arrive in the Serengeti. The endless plain had an abundance of game which they named "Seringiti", meaning "endless plain". After another 6 weeks they reached Ndutu, which they called "endut" meaning a place with a water-filled lake in the plains.  Soon after they followed a gorge which brought them to an area full of sisal plants which they named Oldupai, meaning a country with sisal plants.

Karatu

Located just 15km before Ngorongoro it is a popular place for tourists to spend a night before continuing their safari.  With beautiful lodges and campsites, there is always somewhere to stay that will suit all budgets.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area & the Ngorongoro Crater

Following a strange heavy smokey cloud they ended up in the Ngorongoro highlands.  When the cloud cleared they followed animal tracks down into a vast crater.  They couldn't find a safe place to settle so they built a boma and were astounded by how chilly it was.

Eventually they returned home bringing their families back to Ngorongoro.  We now have the rare privilege to be allowed into their boma which remains very much the same as it was all those years ago.
