DRY SEASON AFRICAN SAFARIS
The HADZABE (Hadzapi) people, sometimes known as the Tindiga, are primitive even by Tanzanian standards. Like the Maasai, they are nomadic, surviving entirely by hunting wild life such as birds, squirrels and other small animals with their homemade longbows and poison tipped arrows, while the women gather edible plants and frutis. Their favourite food is baboon, which they say is very sweet - like chicken! Apart from fish, snakes, crocodile and hyena, which seem to be taboo, they eat more or less any creature, not excepting rats, tortoises and even lion and leopard, the forelegs of these large cats being especially tasty.
The "Hadza", for short, live in the Lake Eyasi area in the heart of the Rift Valley, not far from the Serengeti. They live close to a reliable water supply in their makeshift huts made from sticks and grasses. Their culture has remained the same for perhaps a thousand years, but now with tourism, the bushmen are often seen wearing shorts and the women simple smocks, which are given as gifts by the tourists.
Everything beyond their ancient culture is rubbish, by which they mean inconsequential, or is of no use to them. Check out this amazing video http://youtu.be/er1ti_qPtko on our blog page and contact us for further information.
The DATOGA BLACKSMITHS
are just that, they are very primitive blacksmiths. They use very basic methods over open fires to make spears, utensils, knives and even jewellery from brass and iron. They too are nomadic, but also pastoralists, living around Lake Eyasi. Visitors are able to purchase many of the items created in support of this incredible tribe.
SCHEDULE:
HALF DAY TOUR - it's the early bird that catches the worm, so we have to head off really early around 5.30am for our hunting expedition with the Hadza. We spend time in their campsite and then return to our campsite for breakfast.
HALF DAY TOUR - you can visit the Datoga Blacksmiths at any time during your stay near Lake Eyasi. Many tourists prefer to drop in on their way to Lake Natron where they will stay for several days to climb Oldonyoi Lengai, The Mountain of God, which is still a live volcano today.
